Victoria Derby Review: What The Jockeys Said

Warning showed he is a quality stayer of the future when he demolished his rivals in the Victoria Derby.

Here’s what the jockeys said.

Damien Oliver (Warning – 1st)

It is a long straight when you’re in front so far out but I knew I’d had such an economical run and I had a lot of confidence in him when I worked him last Tuesday that he could stay well, he is such a strong winded horse. He was really strong.

Billy Egan (Southern Moon – 2nd)

Everything worked out lovely and at the 200 (metre mark) I thought everyone’s dreams were going to come true but the other thing just kicked too good.

Dwayne Dunn (Soul Patch – 3rd)

Put in a great effort. He just pulled a little bit firmly in the early part of the race. Presented well off the corner. Take nothing away from the winner. He’s done a great job.

Hugh Bowman (Relucent – 4th)

I was really pleased with him. He’s a really nice stayer in the making. There wasn’t just high enough pressure in the race for us. Needed a really strong pace and that’s what it wasn’t.

Josh Parr (Shadow Hero – 5th)

The finish wasn’t there for him today. I suggested to the stable possibly the first time on a wet track, taken out of his comfort zone for the first time. Possibly the end of the prep, too. A combination of it being too much.

Luke Nolen (Independent Road – 6th)

Probably just unsuited by the slippery conditions.

Craig Williams (Longjack – 7th)

He really offset the outside barrier draw really quick but once he got there he was ok and there he just over-raced where he was with the blinkers on against these horses. It was detrimental with how far he was beaten in the end. He’ll mature from today’s outing towards next year.

Jamie Kah (Craftmanship – 8th)

He settled lovely but I’m not sure whether he didn’t run the trip or doesn’t like the wet. Maybe both.

Jye McNeil (Huntly Castle – 9th)

Was wide around the first turn. Ended up getting a nice trail into it but not 100 per-cent sure that he stayed in the conditions.

Mark Zahra (Thought Of That – 10th)

He wasn’t that quick away but every time I let him off the bridle he just struggled in that ground.

John Allen (Sign Seal Deliver – 11th)

He ran ok for only a maiden.

Jordan Childs (Translator – 12th)

He ran ok. Probably has just come to the end of the prep. Onwards and upwards for next time.

Dean Yendall (He Is – 13th)

He’s looking for a bit of a break. Didn’t stay the trip.

Jack Hill (Lucky Edward – 14th)

He was average.

Michael Walker (Navarre – 15th)

Outclassed.
