Former Dragons premiership winner and NSW State of Origin forward Trent Merrin has been charged over his alleged involvement in an illicit peptide syndicate south of Wollongong. Merrin, 37, was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 24 November.
NSW Police said detectives arrested a 37-year-old man at Surry Hills Police Station about 8am on Tuesday 3 November. Police did not name the man, but The Daily Telegraph, which first reported the arrest, identified him as Merrin.
He was charged with participating in a criminal group and contributing to criminal activity, and five counts of manufacturing goods for use in humans resulting in harm or injury, according to the police statement reported by the Illawarra Mercury.
What police allege
Police said Strike Force Antree was set up in July by detectives from State Crime Command’s Organised Crime Squad, with help from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), to investigate the alleged illegal manufacture, supply and distribution of peptides.
On Friday 24 July, strike force detectives executed a crime scene warrant in Shell Cove, where police allege they uncovered a clandestine peptide manufacturing facility and large quantities of restricted substances.
A 39-year-old man was arrested in August and charged with four counts of manufacturing goods for use in humans resulting in harm or injury. Police said his matter has since been finalised in court. Inquiries under Strike Force Antree are continuing.

Not guilty plea expected
Merrin’s solicitor, Paul McGirr, told News Corp the former forward intends to plead not guilty, Daily Mail Australia reported.
“It’s unclear what his alleged role in the syndicate is,” Mr McGirr said.
“From what I can read there’s nothing linking his DNA or profile to any of the peptides.”
None of the allegations have been tested in court.
Dragons, Blues and Kangaroos career
Merrin made his NRL debut for St George Illawarra in 2009 and was part of the Dragons’ premiership-winning side the following year, as well as the club’s 2011 World Club Challenge win. He played 13 State of Origin matches for NSW between 2011 and 2015, including the Blues’ drought-breaking series win in 2014.
He also played seven Tests for Australia and retired in 2021 after 235 NRL games and a stint with Leeds Rhinos in the Super League, news.com.au reported.
