Trail Blazers deliver with shocking upset over Bucks
January 8, 2025
When the Portland Trail Blazers and Milwaukee Bucks made the blockbuster trade involving Damian Lillard of Oakland, California just over 15 months ago, one would never have thought that the Trail Blazers would have upset the Bucks as a 12.5 point underdog so soon.
However, that is what we had on Saturday night at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In a tightly contested battle, the Trail Blazers upset the Bucks 105-102.
The Trail Blazers star was shooting guard Anfernee Simons of Longwood, Florida. Simons not only led the Trail Blazers with 28 points, five three throws made, and eight assists, he also scored the last five points in the basketball game. He made a two foot layup from two feet with 23 seconds left to tie the score at 102. Simons then closed out the scoring with three consecutive free throws.
All five starters for the Trail Blazers reached double digits in points. Small forward Deni Avdija of Beit Zera, Israel had 19 points. Shooting guard Shaedon Sharpe of London, Ontario, Canada had 16 points, power forward Toumani Camara of Brussels, Belgium had 15 points, and center Deandre Ayton of Nassau, Bahamas had 10 points. Avdija and Ayton both had double doubles. Avdija had 14 rebounds (all defensive rebounds), while Ayton had 13 rebounds. Interestingly, Ayton and Camara were involved in the Lillard deal as they both came to the Trail Blazers via the Phoenix Suns.
With the win, the Trail Blazers improved to 12 wins and 22 losses. Lillard, meanwhile had 16 points. Portland wad not able to continue the momentum after the Saturday win as they lost 118-115 to the Detroit Pistons on Monday.
