Top five moustaches in golf
June 16, 2020
During the coronavirus pause on the PGA Tour, many golfers had a lot of time on their hands. Some played golf so they could be on top of their game when golf was ready to return. Meanwhile, others rested and took up fishing. As for four-time major champion Brooks Koepka, he changed his appearance. Here are the top five moustaches in golf.
5) Corey Pavin–The native of Oxnard, California won the 1995 U.S. Open at Shinnecock. There he only shot a four-round score of even-par, but was good enough to beat Australian golf legend Greg Norman, who was known each and every year for wearing the most stylish hat. In winning the 2006 U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee 11 years later, Pavin set the record for the fewest shots taken to complete nine holes of a PGA event (26).
4) Brooks Koepka–The 30-year-old native of West Palm Beach, Florida seems to have gone with the Tom Selleck-look when it comes to moustaches. It will now be interesting to see how much the hair over his lip will help Koepka’s golf game. This past weekend, Koepka shot a -6 at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, and was only tied for 32nd. Without the mustache, Koepka has won two U.S. Open titles and two PGA Championships.
3) Craig Stadler–Known as “The Walrus”, Stadler won 13 times on the PGA Tour, including the 1982 Masters Title. When Stadler won at Augusta, he defeated Dan Pohl of Mount Pleasant, Michigan in a playoff. A native of San Diego, Stadler made golf history in 2003 when he won the B.C. Open in New York. He became the first golfer ever to win on the PGA Tour after winning on the Champions Tour.
2) Mike Cowan–Nicknamed “Fluff,” Cowan is known as one of the most likable caddies in all of golf. Along the way, he has helped the golfer he has caddied for win two major titles. The first with Tiger Woods at the 1997 Masters, and the second with Jim Furyk at the 2003 U.S. Open. A native of Winslow, Maine, Cowan has also caddied for Ed Sabo, Peter Jacobsen, and Michelle Wie.
1) Gary McCord–The 1991 Ben Hogan Gateway Champion is best known for his commentary on CBS. He was with the network for 33 years from 1986 to 2019. Sometimes McCord would get into trouble. At the 1984 FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis, McCord’s pants split open when lining up for a putt on the 15th hole. A bigger issue for McCord at the time is that he was not wearing any underwear. Then at the 1994 Masters while working for CBS, McCord stated the greens were so smooth, they were “bikini-waxed.” For those inappropriate comments, McCord was removed from the CBS broadcasting team by the Augusta National Golf Club for the rest of his broadcasting career. Despite the controversies, we like McCord’s Rollie Fingers-like moustache and is number one on our list!
