‘Took a punt’: Reynolds to give Broncos one more year before he retires

Adam Reynolds has just one last season to go in the NRL, agreeing to play out his last 12 months with the Brisbane Broncos before wrapping up a rugby league career that’s already seen him play 309 first-grade matches and win two premierships.

The 35-year-old halfback debuted for South Sydney in 2012 and won the title with the Rabbitohs in 2014. He headed north in 2022 after being told he was too old to get any deal longer than 12-months at Redfern, playing a key role in the young squad that eventually built into a championship outfit under Michael Maguire in the NRL campaign just gone.

“I love this club, it has given me a lot,” Reynolds said of the Broncos. “They took a punt on me a few years ago, and all I’ve tried to do is make the place better. It’s been a great journey… I’ve had a lot of great moments, memories and friendships I’ve made in this time. I’d like to elevate the squad and the standards of this club to help it reach more heights.”

He’ll be “chasing more success” before he leaves, too — when launching the Broncos’ season this week, he said he wants to win the Club World Challenge with Brisbane (to be played this weekend) and defend their NRL championship.

“Looking forward to finishing off on a high and creating some more memories along the way,” he said.

“We had success last year, but we are chasing more,” he added, declaring his Brisbane squad is “still hungry.”

Reynold was without a contract next year and had been considering playing on at Red Hill into 2027 and beyond. After several injuries on the way to the 2025 grand final victory, however, the 35-year-old will step into the coaching room alongside Maguire in 2027. Jonah Pezet (who’s playing in Parramatta this season) will take the no.7 jumper.

Brisbane isn’t participating in the NRL preseason and will instead travel to England this week to play Hull KR in the World Club Championship. Australia last won the cross-comp battle in 2020, when Sydney beat St Helens.

The Queensland powerhouse last contested the Club Champs in 2007, and last won in 1997.
