Tomas Machac of Beroun, Czech Republic has won the 2025 Mexican Open in Acapulco. In the final, Machac defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain 7-6, 6-2.
This is Machac’s first ATP title, and his second ATP final. Machac’s only other ATP Final came at the 2024 Geneva Open in Switzerland, as he lost to Casper Ruud of Norway, 7-5, 6-3.
This may have been Machac’s first ATP title, however, he made headlines last summer when he won the Olympic gold medal in mixed doubles. He teamed up with Katerina Siniakova to win one of three gold medals for the Czech Republic at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The other two gold medals came in canoeing as Martin Fuksa won gold in the men’s 1000 metre canoeing event and Josef Dostal won gold in the men’s 1000 metre kayaking event.
In the 2025 Mexican Open in Acapulco final, the key statistic was the serve. Machac had 11 aces compared to four for Davidovich Fokina.
This was the second time in Machac’s career he defeated Davidovich Fokina. He previously beat Davidovich Fokina 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 in the second round of the 2024 Rolex Masters in Shanghai. It was a strong run for Machac in Shanghai last October. He reached the semifinals before losing 6-4, 7-5 to world number one Jannik Sinner of Italy. This was Machac’s best ever result at an ATP Masters 1000 series event. Machac’s most notable wins in Shanghai came over American Tommy Paul in the fourth round (3-6, 6-4, 6-3), and world number three Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the quarterfinals (7-6, 7-5).
Also in 2024, Machac delivered a notable first round win at Wimbledon. What could have been considered the comeback of the year, Machac was trailing Belgium’s David Goffin 5-0 in the fifth set, before forcing a fifth set tiebreak and winning the match 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-6, including 10-5 in the fifth set tiebreak.
