The Rocket Classic has a little bit more meaning this year than past years. That is because it was announced on June 9 that the PGA Tour would not be returning to the Motor City in 2027. The decision to get rid of the Rocket Classic is actually quite bizarre because the course recently went through an extended renovation that made the course tougher. Here are the three golfers we like the most at the 2026 Rocket Classic.
Cameron Young
We all know who the top two golfers are in the world. You might be surprised that Cameron Young of Scarborough, New York is ranked number three. Young has not missed a single cut since the 2025 British Open, and looked fantastic this year in Florida with wins at the Players Championship and Cadillac Championship. He has also been in contention at the Rocket Classic in the past. Young was runner up to Tony Finau in 2022.
Xander Schauffele
It just feels like Xander Schauffele will get in the win column at some point this year. The world number 15 was once ranked second in the world, but has struggled with his consistency. Still, Schauffele does have four top 10 finishes in 2026, and has 10 career PGA Tour victories. He has also not missed the cut at a PGA tournament in the United States since the Farmers Insurance Open in January.
Chris Gotterup
The world number seven has won three times in 2026–Hawaii, Phoenix and the John Deere Classic. There is a connection between the Sony Open in Honolulu and the Rocket Mortgage Classic, as both events are not returning in 2027.
