The Plunge’s Trial Review: Horses Must Follow From Last Week’s Trials 6/2

A grey from the Godolphin yard and a 3yo colt who will be aimed at some feature sprints this autumn caught my eye at the trials this week. Click below to read more.

Subedar

Subedar’s trial at Warrick Farm on Monday may slip under the radar in form guides. This Godolphin 4yo earned a spot in my black book after finishing 2nd to the highly rated All Time Legend 1st up off a 62 week break on January 9th.

At the trials Rachel King settled him at the rear and he stuck to the inside when others looked for better ground wide out on a rain affect track. He made great ground late under a strong hold and even looked to be travelling better than Icebath at one point, a horse that flashed home to finish 2nd in the Golden Eagle last start. On paper it will say 4th of 7 but it was much better than that.

When To Bet

Subedar will not be facing anything as strong as Icebath if Cummings continues to look to work him through the grades. There’s a BM 88 at Randwick in a weeks time that looks ideal.

Mamaragan

Mamaragan pinged the gates and took an early lead in a Group and Listed trial at Randwick on Friday. The Thompson colt quickened at the top of the straight and gave nothing a chance to run it down and recorded a quick time without being fully extended.

He has always demonstrated above average ability after finishing 3rd in last year’s Golden Slippert in just his 2nd race start. John Thompson sounded confident that he had made some necessary training adjustments ahead of this preparation. He hinted that he had been recommended the horse be extended out to 1400m and 1600m Group 1 races in his first prep as a 3yo by a jockey but is now certain that he is an out and out sprinter and will be trained accordingly.

When To Bet

I expect big improvements from him and we may even get a generous price when he resumes in a feature sprint race over the carnival.
