The Plunge’s Saturday Review: Horses You Must Follow From Randwick 12/2

We failed to hit the mark on Saturday after disappointing performances from 3yo fillies Mallory and Four Moves Ahead and Icebath failing to get conditions to suit in the Apollo Stakes. Looking ahead, I’ve picked out an emerging filly from the Waller yard that punters should give another chance.

The Plunge’s Service Results since December 2020:
  • +37.8 units of profit
  • 125 bets: 33 wins/41 placings

Espiona – Randwick

  • Race 7
  • Distance: 1200m
  • Class: G2 Light Fingers Stakes 3yo Fillies

Easier to forgive when not on at the short odds but I do believe it will pay to forgive the much hyped 1st up performance of Espiona. Her run was much better than it looked on Saturday.

After running home strongly to within less than a length of Wild Ruler and Nature Strip in a recent trial, Espiona was all the rage but had nothing go her way after being slowly away from gate 10 and then sustained a wide run from midfield. She tracked into the race nicely but was exposed and hit the front far too soon at the top of the Randwick straight.

From here Jamaea, who had the benefit of an extra run under her belt, looked like she would run straight past Espiona when she peeled out from behind her but the Waller filly was game and kicked back. Fangirl who benefited from the cold run was strong late and pipped her stablemate by a small margin late.

When To Bet

The G1 Surround Stakes over 1400m is the next leg in the Princess Series and the likely next step. She will be better value than the $1.55 available Saturday.
