The Plunge’s Black Book: Horses Running At Rosehill & Moonee Valley 20/3

A talented Sydney sprinter making his way down to Melbourne for the William Reid Stakes and an emerging 3yo sprinter contesting the Galaxy in Sydney are two of my black booked runners this Saturday. I’ll also take a look at the Golden Slipper and highlight a horse that is sure to appreciate the heavy track.

Moonee Valley Race 7 – Masked Crusader

Masked Crusader heads to Melbourne on the back of a great run in the Canterbury Stakes where he stepped up to G1 WFA racing for the first time.

After missing the kick from barrier 2, he was forced to settle at the rear of the field. He worked his way into the race at the turn when he came across heels and let down a huge run to finish 3rd making horses like Dreamforce and Bivouac look like 2nd raters as he went past them.

Ideally I would prefer him to be going back to handicap conditions where he would be much better weighted but I still can’t go past his last run. He faces some of Melbourne’s top sprinters but I’m confident he can mix it with them.

Rosehill Race 7 – Profiteer

Profiteer is all the rage in the Golden Slipper markets and it’s easy to see why with all the things that seem to be falling into place for the Price and Kent trained colt.

Barrier 5 is a huge tick where he will land on the speed and either control the race or take a sit off a bunny if something wants to set a hectic pace.

The wet track may be a query for a lot of these runners but there is no doubt Profiteer revels in it after he dominated the Inglis Millennium field from pillar to post winning by 5 lengths.

I do believe the Todman along with the Blue Diamond are the two form races for this year’s Slipper and although he was pipped on the post by Anamoe, Mick Price has been strong in his conviction that his colt will improve lengths off that Todman run.

Hugh Bowman got off him on Tuesday morning and told stable staff that they will be dancing Saturday night so it’s hard not to take note of the confidence oozing from connections.

Rosehill Race 8 – Wild Ruler

Wild Ruler stepped out for his first run this preparation in the Listed Fireball Stakes and easily put away a field of up and coming 3yos.

The Snowden trained colt jumped well and was quickly headed by Mamaragan who went on to set blistering early sectionals. J Mac sat four lengths off the tear away leader in second and was forced to cart the field up to the leader.

Mamaragan quickly faded and eventually finished 4L away last in the small field. The race shaped nicely for the likes of Andermatt, Doubtland and On the Lead to finish strong from the tail of the field but when asked to deliver Wild Ruler pinned the ears back and let down a strong run to win by 1.3L over place getters he was giving away 3kg to due to the set weight with penalty conditions.

He steps up to Group 1 company in the Galaxy at Rosehill and benefits from dropping right down to 52kg. Seasoned sprinters like Eduardo, Fabergino, Tailleur, Haut Brion Her and Jonker are going to ensure there is a hectic pace up front. I can see Wild Ruler sitting in behind them and fanning out to the best part of the track and being very strong late here.
