The $13m Everest Preview: Odds & Insights For The Richest Race On Turf

October 10, 2018

By Lindsay

The world’s richest horse race on turf is set to jump this Saturday so we thought it would be a good time to give you some key insights and predictions for the race.

1. Redzel

  • Barrier: 1
  • Trainer: P Snowden
  • Jockey: K McEvoy

Winner of the inaugural version of this race last year. Races on the speed and makes his own luck but his point of difference from other front runners is his ability to produce an electric turn of foot at the 400m mark after racing on the speed. A slight question mark after his average run in the Premier last start. One of the major players.

2. Santa Ana Lane

  • Barrier: 9
  • Trainer: R Freedman
  • Jockey: B Melham

Firmed in as one of the major players with an impressive come from behind win in the Premiere Stakes. Stradbroke Handicap winner last preparation and has multiple wins on the wet. Will be making up big ground late but will he have to give them too much start?

Odds: $8 Bet Now @ Bet365

3. Le Romain

  • Barrier: 11
  • Trainer: K Lees
  • Jockey: G Schofield

Proven WFA performer. Stepping back in distance after finishing second to Winx in the George Main last start. Wide barrier draw isn’t a huge concern as he is a big large striding galloper that prefers racing 2-3 wide. It may be a furlong too short but if it keeps raining in Sydney then he becomes a major player.

Odds: $21 Bet Now @ Bet365

4. Trapeze Artist

  • Barrier: 6
  • Trainer: G Ryan
  • Jockey: T Angland

Took all before him last Autumn winning the All Aged and TJ Smith Stakes, defeating Redzel in the former. Has been running on well for minor placings in two runs this spell. Would add huge value as stallion prospect if he can get over the line here. Another one that will be running home late.

Odds: $7.5 Bet Now @ Bet365

5. Vega Magic

  • Barrier: 7
  • Trainer: Hayes & Dabernig
  • Jockey: D Oliver

Was an unlucky 2nd in this race last year. Couldn’t have been more impressive winning in Melbourne first up. Has good wet track form but connections have openly admitted they would much prefer a dry surface. Expecting him to race on the speed and to be right there when the whips are cracking.

Odds: $7 Bet Now @ Bet365

6. Brave Smash

  • Barrier: 4
  • Trainer: D Weir
  • Jockey: H Bowman

Japanese import that will need to lift a little on recent form. Ran a nice third in this race last year but has never won on the wet. Has the benefit of Australia’s best jockey in the saddle. Looking elsewhere.

Odds: $15 Bet Now @ Bet365

8. U S Navy Flag

  • Barrier: 3
  • Trainer: A O’Brien
  • Jockey: R Moore

Irish visitor that brings supreme form after winning the July Cup at Newmarket last start. Trainer and jockey combination is world class and a lot will rely on how well he has travelled and settled in. Would like to see an International horse win an Everest without a run here in preparation before getting too excited about this one doing it. Adds plenty of intrigue but cannot buy in with too much confidence.

Odds: $11 Bet Now @ Bet365

9. In Her Time

  • Barrier: 8
  • Trainer: K Lees
  • Jockey: C Brown

Proven Group 1 sprinter that would love to race just behind the speed with cover but the barrier might effect that. Was only beaten a very small margin by Santa Ana Lane and Shoals last start and wouldn’t surprise to see her turn the tables with that run under her belt.

10. Shoals

  • Barrier: 2
  • Trainer: A Freedman
  • Jockey: T Clark

Ran a brilliant 2nd to Santa Ana Lane in the Premier Stakes last start. Appears to be the horse hitting her best form at the right time here. Barrier 2 isn’t ideal as she will get back in the run and doesn’t want to to held on the fence. Will be charging home late.

Odds: $8 Bet Now @ Bet365

11. Viddora

  • Barrier: 12
  • Trainer: L Kennewell
  • Jockey: J Bowditch

Multiple Group 1 winning mare who gained a start here with an impressive win in the Moir Stakes 2 weeks ago. 5:2-1-0 on the soft going but without a start on the heavy. Won the Magic Millions Sprint last prep and may be the forgotten horse here.

Odds: $15 Bet Now @ Bet365

12. Graff

  • Barrier: 10
  • Trainer: K Lees
  • Jockey: B Avdulla

The knockout hope of the race. Love the bold tactics from Lees in nominating this up and coming star in this race. 3yo colts have an amazing record in the Cox Plate, another of Australia’s major weight for age races. Barrier 10 is far from ideal but it is likely he will be getting back and hoping to run home off a fast pace.

Odds: $17 Bet Now @ Bet365

17. Osborne Bulls

  • Barrier: 5
  • Trainer: J Cummings
  • Jockey: T Berry

Gained a late start with the scratching of Home of the Brave and Tommy Berry jumps into the saddle. Won the Regal Roller Stakes before finishing 5th in the Sir Rupert Clarke. This is a big step up in class but is 2 from 2 in the wet.

Odds: $17 Bet Now @ Bet365
