One of the biggest tennis stories of the month of February so far is the imminent retirement of Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro. At 33 years of age, there is an expectation that Del Potro will either retire at the Argentina Open this week or the Rio Open next week according to Steve Tignor of tennis.com.
If you have been wondering what Del Potro has been up to lately, the answer has simply been constant recovery from injuries. The latest was a broken knee he suffered at the Queen’s Club in London, England last year. Del Potro also has had a wrist problem which has caused significant problems for him as well.
When Del Potro was able to play tennis at a high level, he was simply right there with the game’s very best. His most notable performance was a shocking grand slam title at the 2009 United States Open, where he beat Roger Federer of Switzerland in the final, 3-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. What made Del Potro’s win over Federer so magical here is the fact that Del Potro was able to outpower Federer, in a time when the seventh richest sportsman of 2019 was in his prime.
Del Potro also won an Olympic silver medal in his home continent of South America, where he was beaten by Andy Murray of Great Britain in the gold medal final of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Four years earlier, Del Potro also won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
In 2018, Del Potro reached a career-best world number three. That year he reached his second grand slam final where he lost the United States Open to Novak Djokovic. When it came to ATP Finals, Del Potro won 22 titles, with his last title coming at Indian Wells in 2018. It just so happens he beat Federer there too.
