Dayana Yastremska to return to tennis after six month suspension

According to Chris Oddo of Tennis Now on Tuesday, Ukrainian women’s tennis player Dayana Yastremska is eligible to return to the Women’s Tennis Association Tour after being suspended since January for taking the banned substance Mesterolone. After an Independent Tribunal hearing, Yastremska was not at fault regarding how Mesterolone entered her system, and will be eligible to return to professional women’s tennis effective immediately.

However, the term “immediately,” is a little bit fuzzy. That is because she is not on the entry list for Wimbledon, which begins on Monday. If Yastremska is indeed unable to compete at the third major of the season, the earliest she could return to the WTA Tour is the Hamburg European Open in the first week of July in Germany, during the second week of Wimbledon.

Yastremska was ranked 29th in the world at the time of her suspension, as it was initially determined she was “provisionally suspended.”  The initial reports stated that mesterolone was a drug “used to boost testosterone” and was an “anabolic agent used in male infertility treatment.”

Fortunately for Yastremska, she only dropped eight places in the world ranking since her suspension. She is now ranked 37th in the world with 1765 points.

During the 2020 WTA season, Yastremska made significant noise in Australia as she reached the Adelaide International Open leading up to the Australian Open. Along the way she beat Timea Babos of Hungary, three-time grand slam champion Angelique Kerber of Germany, Donna Vekic of Croatia, and Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, before losing to Ashleigh Barty of Australia.

Yastremska has three career WTA victories. She previously won the 2018 Hong Kong Open, the 2019 Hua Hin Championship in Thailand, and the 2019 Strasbourg International in France.
