Dayana Yastremska recovering from coronavirus

According to Kamakshi Tandon of tennis.com on Tuesday, 20-year-old Ukrainian tennis star Dayana Yastremska has tested positive for coronavirus. Currently ranked 29th in the world, Yastremska received the positive test several weeks ago upon arriving to Dubai for a training session, and has just recently announced her diagnosis. She then went into self-isolation, and did not train for two weeks.

Like many people across the world, Yastremska suffered symptoms. According to Chris Oddo of Tennis Now, her symptoms were “very strange” and she is encouraging everyone to be careful.

We know of many men’s tennis stars who have had coronavirus. However, not many women’s tennis players have tested positive. In late October, around Halloween, Simona Halep of Romania tested positive for the disease. We also know that Fiona Ferro of France tested positive two months ago, and an unnamed player tested positive leading up to the Palermo Open in Italy in August.

Yastremska has won three career WTA tournaments. Her first came in 2018 when she beat Qiang Wang of China, 6-2, 6-1, to win the Hong Kong Open. That was followed by two more tournament titles in 2019. She beat Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 in the final of the Hua Hin Championship in Thailand, and then Caroline Garcia of France, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 in the final of the Internationaux de Strasbourg.

In Yastremska’s native country of Ukraine, there have been 919, 704 cases of coronavirus, and 15, 744 deaths. In the United Arab Emirates, where Yastremska has tested positive, there have been 188, 545 cases, and 626 deaths.

Yastremska made tennis headlines in September when she split with her coach, Sascha Bajin. In late November, Bajin teamed up with world number six and 2016 U.S. Open Finalist Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic. Yastremska has not yet reported who will be her next coach.
