Dan Evans and Johanna Konta test positive for coronavirus
July 16, 2021

Even though many people worldwide are vaccinated, we are still seeing many high-performance athletes test positive for coronavirus. This week there has been an outbreak among the New York Yankees in Major League Baseball which forced their Thursday night postponement against the Boston Red Sox, and this past week two British tennis players–Dan Evans and Johanna Konta tested positive for coronavirus according to lta.org.uk. As a result, Evans and Konta will not be representing Great Britain at the 2020 Olympic Games in 2021.
Konta missed Wimbledon even though she beat Shuai Zhang of China in the final of the Nottingham Open, 6-2, 6-1. That is because a close contact of hers tested positive for coronavirus, and Konta needed to self isolate in Great Britain. The withdrawal was tough as Konta was heading into Wimbledon in excellent form.

Evans is coming off a third round loss at Wimbledon to Sebastian Korda of the United States. There Evans lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Korda meanwhile decided not to compete for the United States in men’s tennis at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, but his sisters Jessica and Nelly Korda will be in women’s golf. Nelly Korda is currently number one in the world in women’s golf after winning the 2021 Women’s PGA Championship for the first major title of her career.
Great Britain meanwhile has had 5,281,098 cases of coronavirus, and 128,593 deaths. They also have 772,475 active cases, while 4,380,030 British people have recovered. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there has been a rapid increase of coronavirus in London and southeast England since November of 2020 because of the British variant.
