Barbora Krejcikova continuing singles and doubles success at the 2022 Australian Open

Reigning French Open women’s singles and doubles champion Barbora Krejcikova of Brno, Czech Republic is continuing her success in singles and doubles at the 2022 Australian Open. On Friday at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Krejcikova, who is the fourth seed in singles, defeated the 26th ranked Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in third round action.

This was an intriguing matchup because Krejcikova and Ostapenko have both won the French Open in the past. Ostapenko’s French Open title came in 2017, where she beat Romania’s Simona Halep, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Krejcikova’s 2022 French Open title came over Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

Meanwhile in women’s doubles, Krejcikova and her partner Katerina Siniakova are seeded first and the clear favourites. In round one on Wednesday, Krejcikova and Siniakova defeated Australia’s Arina Rodionova and the Netherlands’ Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove 6-0, 6-2, in a completely dominant performance where Krejcikova and Siniakova won a combined 88% of their first serve points.

Krejcikova and Siniakova have won three career women’s doubles tournaments at the grand slam level. They also won the 2018 French Open and 2018 Wimbledon.

Meanwhile in men’s tennis, there are three male players left who are still in the men’s singles and men’s doubles draws. They are Australia’s Christopher O’Connell, Spain’s Pablo Andujar, and the Netherlands’s Botic van de Zandschulp. O’Connell has teamed up with Australian Jason Kubler. Andujar is with Spain’s Pedro Martinez, and van de Zandschulp is with fellow Dutchman Robin Haase. O’Connell made tennis headlines on Thursday when he stunned the 13th seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina in second round men’s singles action, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.
