Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic win singles gold medals at the 2020 Olympics

The individual medals were awarded in tennis this past weekend at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. For the third time in the history of the Olympic Games, Germany and Switzerland have won Olympic gold in tennis. In the men’s final, Alexander Zverev of Germany, clobbered Karen Khachanov of Russia 6-3, 6-1, while in the women’s final, Belinda Bencic of Switzerland defeated 2019 French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

Germany’s prior Olympic gold medals came from Steffi Graf in women’s singles, and Boris Becker and Michael Stich in men’s doubles. Graf was victorious at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul when she won the golden slam, while Becker and Stich won the gold medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Switzerland’s prior Olympic gold medals came from Marc Rosset in men’s singles at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, and Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka in men’s doubles at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Zverev’s win over Khachanov will be memorable. However his win in the men’s semifinal could carry more significance. That is because he beat the great Novak Djokovic of Serbia, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the men’s semifinals, and prevented Djokovic from following in Graf’s footsteps and winning the Golden Slam.

Two more gold medals were handed out from tennis on the weekend. French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova teamed up with Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic to beat Bencic and Victorija Golubic of Switzerland 7-5, 6-1. Meanwhile, it was an all-Russian mixed doubles final as Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Andrey Rublev defeated Elena Vesnina and Aslan Karatsev, 6-3, 6-7, [13-11].
