‘Sweet, I’m ready’: Luai in for Blues after Moses goes down in training
June 12, 2025

Jarome Luai will return to the State of Origin arena next Wednesday as New South Wales looks to close out the 2025 series, replacing named five-eighth Mitchell Moses after the incumbent fell foul of a calf injury.
Moses was training with the Blues team on Thursday when he clutched at his calf during a short-side training drill. He has been managing calf tightness through much of the week.

Following several tests and checks, the Eels halfback was ruled out of playing in the series’ second match in Perth next week. In steps Luai, who was sent the SOS call through lunchtime today and immediately said yes. Burton, who remains the 18th man, could have been another option should Blues coach Laurie Daley have wanted to go down that route.
“I said at the time Jarome handled [his Origin I snub] with such class, and he said that if I needed him, he’d be ready to go,” Daley said.
“So when I called him today, he said, ‘Sweet, I’m ready to go.’ That filled me with confidence. I said, ‘What are you doing?’, he said, ‘I’ve just finished training.’ I said, ‘You fit?’ and he said, ‘I am.’ “I said, ‘Do you want to play Origin?’, he said, ‘Yes.’ It was as simple as that.” [the_ad id=”135784″]
The emergency call-up reunites Nathan Cleary with Luai after the latter left the Panthers to join the Tigers this season. Together, the halves pair won four straight NRL premierships and boast the clear highest ever win percentage for modern-era halves in 87.6%.
All in all, not a bad replacement for the Blues as they chase a 2-0 lead in the series.
(Heck, this Sporting Base writer would have picked Luai ahead of Moses for Game 1 anyway.) Daley agrees that Luai’s a perfect replacement: “Luai’s got a good combination with Nathan… he’s that left-side player. He’s won four grand finals and won the Origin series last year. Everyone will have a lot of confidence and faith in him.” “There will only be a couple of training sessions,” he continued, “but the fact he’s played with [the Blues] left edge last year is an advantage. It’s not like you’re bringing in someone who hasn’t been here before or played with those players. I don’t know Jarome that well, but he’d believe in himself, too, that he can come in and do the job at short notice.”
Elsewhere in the Blues camp, winger Brian To’o was kept to light training on Thursday. Jacob Kiraz has been called in to potentially replace him and trained with the team through today.
