Simona Halep, Denis Shapovalov, Stanislas Wawrinka withdraw from the French Open

Three notable players have withdrawn from the French Open which begins on Sunday. They are Denis Shapovalov of Canada and Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland on the men’s side, and Simona Halep of Romania on the women’s side. All three players are currently experiencing an injury according to Damian Kust of Last Word on Sports.

Halep announced her withdrawal at the end of last week due to a calf injury. Wawrinka has a left foot injury, and Shapovalov has a shoulder ailment.

Halep and Wawrinka have won the French Open before. Halep beat American Sloane Stephens in 2018, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Wawrinka beat Novak Djokovic of Serbia 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in 2015.

Halep initially injured her calf in a second-round match against Angelique Kerber of Germany at the Italian Open. Halep was leading Kerber 6-1, 3-3 at the time. Halep was one of two women to pull out of the second round of the Italian Open. The other was American Jennifer Brady.

The announcement of Shapovalov’s withdrawal comes one day after he qualified for the Geneva Open final, where he lost to Norway’s Casper Ruud, 7-6, 6-4. Other players who are not going to the French Open are Nick Kyrgios of Australia, Vasek Pospisil of Canada, Kyle Edmund of Great Britain, Borna Coric of Croatia, and Attila Balazs of Hungary.

Kyrgios and Pospisil have decided to focus on the grass-court season with Wimbledon just around the corner. Edmund cited a knee injury,  Balazs cited a leg injury, and like Shapovalov, Coric has a shoulder problem.

Pospisil has not played since his outburst at the Miami Open against American Masin McDonald. There he surprisingly was not suspended after criticizing ATP president Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy during his match.
