The 2024 British Open is at the halfway point at Royal Troon and Shane Lowry of Clara, Ireland is in the lead. Lowry is at seven-under-par after posting a score of two-under-par on Friday.
Lowry had five birdies, one bogey, and one double bogey for his round. He birdied the first, fourth, eighth, 16th, and 18th holes, bogeyed the fifth hole, and double bogeyed the 11th hole.
It is interesting that Lowry has the lead despite a double bogey. On the par four 11th hole, the 2019 British Open champion had a penalty drop after his golf ball landed in the bush and ended up with a score of six. He reportedly was very satisfied with the double bogey, because in his opinion it could have been significantly worse.
Daniel Brown of Northallerton, England, the first round leader, is in second place at -5. He is tied with fellow Englishman Justin Rose of London. Both Brown and Rose are only two strokes back of Lowry.
Brown is in second place despite being one over par on Friday. The 272nd ranked player did not have a bogey on his card in round one on Thursday, (had six birdies in his leading score of -6 for round one). In the second round, Brown had three bogeys, as he was one-over-par on the fourth, ninth, and 17th holes. Brown’s birdies came on the 10th and 16th holes.
Rose, the 2013 United States Open champion and 2016 Olympic gold medallist, got into contention with birdies on the 16th and 18th holes. The fact that Rose shot a second round score of three-under-par 68 was significant, because most golfers in the afternoon session of the second round struggled with the windy conditions. Rose also birdied the fourth and seventh holes, and bogeyed the 12th hole.
