Serena Williams withdraws from Wimbledon

According to the Associated Press on Tuesday, Serena Williams of Saginaw, Michigan, considered one of the best women’s tennis players of all-time, has withdrawn from Wimbledon because of a right leg injury. Williams appeared to injure her leg as she slipped on the wet grass after a lengthy rain delay at the All England Club. She was playing in her first round match on Tuesday against Aliakasandra Sasnovich of Belarus. It was clear Williams struggled with her overall movement. Williams’s withdrawal came at three games all in the first set.

Williams was one of two players to withdraw from their match on Tuesday on Center Court. The other was Adrian Mannarino of France, who was set to play his  fifth set against Roger Federer of Switzerland, when he pulled out. Meanwhile, Canadian Denis Shapovalov won his match against Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany, but was not happy about the slippery conditions on Court 12.

Serena’s dominance at Wimbledon over the last two decades is profound. In addition to winning gold in women’s singles at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Serena had won seven Wimbledon titles (2002, 2003, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2016).

This was the second time Serena Williams withdrew from a tournament this week. Earlier this week she withdrew from the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.

In other women’s tennis news, Johanna Konta, the British tennis professional who was originally born in Sydney, has had to withdraw from Wimbledon because she was in close contact to someone who tested positive for coronavirus. Konta reached the semifinals of Wimbledon in 2017.
