Semifinals set for 2024 US Open

We now know the four players left on the men’s and women’s draws at the 2024 United States Open. In the women’s semifinals on Thursday, Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic faces the sixth seed Jessica Pegula of the United States. and the 13th seed Emma Navarro of the United States faces the second seed and two-time Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. In the men’s semifinals on Friday, Taylor Fritz of the United States, the 12th seed, faces Frances Tiafoe of the United States, the 20th seed, and the number one seed and 2024 Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner of Italy faces the 25th seed Jack Draper of Great Britain.

Muchova upset the 22nd seed Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-4. Pegula upset the number one seed Iga Swiatek of Poland 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Pegula won the only prior meeting versus Muchova, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the 2024 Cincinnati Open.

Navarro beat the 26th seed Paula Badosa of Spain, 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. Sabalenka beat the seventh seed Qinwen Zheng of China 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Sabalenka and Navarro have beaten each other once. Navarro won 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the fourth round of Indian Wells in 2024, and Sabalenka won 6-2, 6-3 in the fourth round of the French Open in 2024.

Fritz upset Alexander Zverev of Germany, the fourth seed, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 in the quarterfinals, and Tiafoe upset the ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 4-1 in the quarterfinals. Fritz has beaten Tiafoe in six of seven prior meetings.

Sinner beat fifth seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, and Draper upset the 10th seed Alex de Minaur of Australia 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Draper won the only prior meeting, 7-6, 7-6, in the first round of Queen’s in 2021.
