Sea Eagles chase Fogarty as ‘like-for-like’ DCE replacement

Manly seem to have found their Daly Cherry-Evans replacement in Jamal Fogarty, with the Canberra Raiders making it clear they won’t stand in his way should he want to accept the Sea Eagles’ $1 million offer.

The Raiders do have a 12-month extension on the table for Fogarty worth around $700,000 through 2026, but the Sea Eagles are ready to sign the 31-year-old for two years instead.

The Sporting Base would at this stage be surprised if Fogarty picked the $700K over the two-year safety; Manly’s offer stands at around $500,000 a season, meaning he would lock in $1 million in earnings through to 2027. Whatever deal he signs in the coming weeks could even be his final playing contract considering his age.

There’s also a Round 20 safety for Fogarty with a Raiders option, but it would be for less.

What that does mean though is the Canberra star can speak to Manly knowing he has a fallback.

Manly sees Fogarty as the perfect replacement for “DCE” with the at-the-moment-Raiders halves star to (obviously) play first grade at the same as mentoring young guns Onitoni Large and Joey Walsh. The Sea Eagles see those two youngsters as the future of the team and want to have them prepped as best as possible before they break through.

Cherry-Evans was originally planned to have a guiding role in Large and Walsh’s developments but it’s now confirmed he won’t be at Manly – where he’s played 334 games – beyond the end of this year.
