St Kilda has landed Brisbane midfielder Sam Marshall in a deal lodged with the AFL on Friday, with the Saints sending their 2027 first-round pick north for Marshall and this year’s pick No.39.
AFL.com.au reported the trade on Friday 9 October, saying Marshall had been granted a move in his bid for more senior opportunities away from Brisbane. AFL.com.au’s Josh Gabelich confirmed the deal had been lodged with the League on a busy trade day, well ahead of next Wednesday’s official deadline.
Gabelich wrote on X that Brisbane had traded Sam Marshall and pick No.39 to St Kilda for a 2027 first-round pick, with the deal lodged with the AFL.
Academy Lion seeks opportunity
Marshall joined Brisbane through the 2024 national draft when the Lions matched a bid at pick No.25 for their Academy product, AFL.com.au said. He played 11 senior games in his first season and was part of Brisbane’s 2025 premiership side.
Senior opportunities dried up in 2026, with Marshall managing just two AFL appearances this year, according to AFL.com.au. That limited game time underpinned his push to leave the three-peat contenders for regular senior football in Victoria.
The move gives St Kilda another young midfielder at Moorabbin after a week already marked by list change, including the Saints trading ruckman Rowan Marshall to Geelong for pick No.14. St Kilda now reshapes its midfield depth after that ruck exit and this incoming Academy graduate.
Neither Brisbane nor St Kilda had issued a full club statement on the Marshall deal at the time of writing. The trade period remains open until Wednesday.
