Russell Henley and Richard Bland lead at -5 after round two of the U.S. Open

The second round of the 2021 United States Open has been completed at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California. After Friday’s round, we have two golfers tied for the lead at -5.

In first place, are two golfers who have never won a major title before. They are 48-year-old Richard Bland of Burton, England, and 32-year-old Russell Henley of Macon, Georgia.

Bland made European golf history earlier this year when at the age of 48, became the oldest first-time winner on the European Tour. His victory came at the Bretfred British Masters, where he beat Guido Migliozzi of Italy in a playoff. Bland posted a four-round score of -13, before posting a score of par on the first hole of the playoff.

If Bland were to win the United States Open on Sunday, he would be the third oldest men’s major champion in golf all-time. Phil Mickelson of the United States was the oldest at 50 years of age, when he won the PGA Championship earlier this year.

The golfer currently second on the list is American Julius Boros. When Boros won the 1968 PGA Championship, he was 48 years old, four months, and 18 days. If Bland was to win the 2021 United States Open on Sunday, he will have been 48 years old, four months, and 17 days.

Henley is a three-time winner on the PGA Tour. His victories came at the 2013 Sony Open in Hawaii, the 2014 Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and the 2017 Shell Houston Open.

There are seven golfers in contention, and within three strokes of the lead. Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa and Matthew Wolff of the United States are at -4. Bubba Watson of the United States and John Rahm of Spain are at -3. Meanwhile, Americans Xander Schauffele and Kevin Streelman, along with Canadian Mackenzie Hughes are at -2.
