Rory McIlroy puts himself as a contender to win his fifth major title

What we took away from Quail Hollow this past weekend is the fact that Rory McIlroy is once again in the conversation for another major title victory, (more specifically the fifth in his marvelous golf career), and he loves playing golf in the Carolinas. The 32-year-old Northern Irishman obviously likes the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina as he is a three-time winner there.

Now we will have to see if McIlroy will have his game ready to go when the 2021 PGA Championship in South Carolina takes place later this month. Nine years ago at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina (the same course where the 2021 PGA Championship will be), McIlroy hammered the field, and beat second-place finisher David Lynn of England, by a remarkable eight strokes.

The 2012 PGA Championship victory was McIlroy’s second of his career by eight strokes. He previously beat Australian Jason Day by eight at the 2011 United States Open from the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C. Then after winning his first two majors by a total of 16 strokes, McIlroy won the 2014 British Open and the 2014 PGA Championship. However, those career titles were only by a combined total of three strokes.

McIlroy’s win at the Wells Fargo Championship on Sunday was his first win on the PGA Tour in two years since he won the 2019 World Golf Championship HSBC Champions event in China. One statistic to keep in mind. In all 18 stroke-play events that McIlroy has won on the PGA Tour, he has reached in the double digits under par for each event. In fact, the -10 McIlroy had on Sunday was the worst score he has posted when being in the winner’s circle.
