Roosters rush to re-sign resurgent Teddy for another year

The Sydney Roosters are moving to re-sign James Tedesco for an unplanned extra season, through to 2027, after the club’s veteran fullback defied his age to rediscover career-best form through 2025.

Tedesco, who turns 33 early next year, was expected to hang up the boots at the end of the 2026 NRL season, especially after the Roosters re-signed him for just 12 months at the end of 2024.

A return to his very best through the current NRL campaign has given both “Teddy” and the Roosters pause – and on reflection, the Sydney recruitment team has decided it wants to keep Tedesco playing as long as he’s able. To that end, the club is now preparing a re-signing package that will keep Tedesco until 2027 and keep him away from the Perth Bears.

With the expansion team in mind, the Roosters are aiming to finalise the extension before November 1.

There’s no doubt Tedesco wants to stay in the tricolours; he’s often told those close to him he wants to see out his career in Bondi, where he’s been playing since he left the Wests Tigers in 2018 and has won two rugby league premierships.

The biggest carrot the Perth expansion squad would have is a multi-year offer. The Roosters do want to keep Tedesco as long as he plays, but don’t want to take the risk on his aging body beyond 12-month deals, considering he has been plagued with injuries and issues through much of his 269-game career. He even famously was injured during his Tigers debut.

Should Perth get a chance, the newest NRL team will table a deal through to 2028 or 2029.

The Roosters, of course, want to avoid that – expect any signed deal to come before the end of the season.
