Rick Carlisle resigns as Mavericks head coach
June 19, 2021
The Dallas Mavericks will have a new head coach next season. On Thursday, Rick Carlisle of Ogdensburg, New York resigned after 13 seasons according to Tim MacMahon and Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
This past season the Mavericks had a record of 42 wins and 30 losses. Dallas then reached the NBA Playoffs, but lost in seven games to the Los Angeles Clippers.Â
Carlisle is 61 years of age, and it will now be interesting to see if he has retired from coaching in the NBA or just needs some time away from coaching. In 1033 games coaching for Dallas since 2008, Carlisle had a record of 555 wins and 478 losses for a winning percentage of .537.
Carlisle’s most notable NBA season as a head coach came in 2010-11, when he had a record of 57 wins and 25 losses with Dallas. In the 2011 NBA Playoffs, led by Dirk Nowitzki, the Mavericks won their first and only championship in franchise history as they upset the Miami Heat in six games. The Heat at the time were the heavy favourites, as they were led by their big three, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. In the postseason, the Heat could not find a way to beat the Carlisle-coached Mavericks.

In addition to coaching Dallas, Carlisle also coached the Detroit Pistons from 2001 to 2003, and the Indiana Pacers from 2003 to 2007. In 1525 regular season games, Carlisle has an impressive record of 836 wins and 689 losses for a winning percentage of .548. However since winning the NBA Finals in 2011, Carlisle and the Mavericks have not won a playoff series. They have missed the playoffs four times and have been knocked out in the first round on six other occasions.
