The Boston Red Sox have named Chad Tracy of Charlotte, North Carolina as their new interim manager according to Ian Browne of mlb.com on Sunday. Tracy actually received a promotion as he was previously the manager of the Worcester Red Sox since the 2022 season. The Worcester Red Sox, were the Boston Red Sox’s triple A affiliate and play in the International League.
This is Chad Tracy’s first time managing in the Major Leagues. Chad’s father Jim managed the Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates and Colorado Rockies from 2001 to 2012. In 1736 games, Jim Tracy had a record of 856 wins and 880 losses for a winning percentage of .493.
The Red Sox made the managerial change on Saturday when they fired Alex Cora of Caguas, Puerto Rico. The Red Sox started the season at 10 wins and 17 losses, and are last in the American League East.
What was shocking about the firing is the fact that Boston fired Cora after Boston beat Baltimore 17-1 on Saturday. According to Ian Browne of mlb.com, this was the largest margin of victory (16 runs) by a team in Major League Baseball history on the same day a team fired their manager.
This was the second time that Cora was fired by the Red Sox. He was previously fired by the Red Sox on January 14, 2020, when Major League Baseball announced the primary participants of the Houston Astros sign stealing scandal. Cora was re-hired as the Red Sox manager on November 6, 2020. As a MLB manager in Boston, Cora had a record of 621 wins and 541 losses for a winning percentage of .534.
