Randwick: G3 Breeders’ Plate Runner By Runner Preview & Tips

2yo racing hits Randwick today but with very limited form available we thought we’d ask expert analyst Dean Watling to run his eye over the trials to give us a runner by runner preview for the Breeders’.

1. Almahero ($30,000)

Great trial by the Al Maher gelding, he was placed under pressure in the straight but kept closing, nice attributes of a early 2yo. He was no match for Astrologer but showed great fight. Not the worst.

Expected Position: Pace

2. Astrologer ($300,000)

The son of Star Turn was a little awkward out of the barriers missing the kick, he showed toe to catch up to the field before extending well done the straight. He showed a nice turn of speed and got better the further they went. Nice trial and is one that is over the odds.

Expected Position: Midfield

3. Athelric

A Colt by Exceed and Excel from the Godolphin yard. He was very green in his first trial but sustained a long run just getting a touch tired late. He ran good time over the 845m trial – 50.59.

He can improve off that run and will be much better suited behind a nice tempo. Nice type.

Expected Position: Midfield

4. Construct ($650,000)

Lovely trial from the athletic I Am Invincible colt. He cost $650,00. He missed the kick slightly and was dragged back to the rear, once he balanced up in the straight he managed to reel off a powerful turn of speed taking many lengths off the leaders before being eased down.

Smart piece of work, his in with a big chance.

Expected Position: Backmarker/Midfield

5. Hodgson ($200,000)

Comes through the same trial as Construct where he struggled a touch, he had a very wayward action and looked to labour in the straight before picking himself up over the last 50m. Prefer others.

Expected Position: Midfield

6. Kalashnikov ($600,000)

Trial of the morning from the Colts and Gelding’s, the Capitalist colt showed great early speed dictating the trial throughout before letting down through his gears sharply in the straight, smart trial with a great response to riding.

Got better the further they went, his the one to beat here.

Expected Position: Pace

7. Khumbv

Could be a sneaky trial from the Denman colt, he got strung up in traffic as he was about to let down, never got a shot at them. Would have to take on trust but looks a task.

Expected Position: Pace/Midfield

8. Lease

  • Market Price: $27
  • Assessed Price: $20

Speedy but small type, he handled the pressure well over the 745m when racing on speed throughout. The son of Choisir was able to stick on and run through the line. Will need to improve here.

Expected Position: Midfield/Pace

9. Maurice Medad

Lovely colt who showed great improvement between his two trials. The son of Maurice has a big action and showed a nice turn of foot closing down the outside in his recent trial, a nice attribute of a 2yo when they stick to the task.

He ran right through the line which is key. If they go hard up front his a winning chance.

Expected Position: Backmarker

10. Retiro ($350,000)

Struggled to kept up wth the field early but was able to balance up and chase hard in the straight, did his best work late but the 1000m looks short of his best. Plenty to learn.

Expected Position: Pace

11. Retrieval

The second Godolphin colt to line up, he was strung up badly the entire straight before being asked to hit a tight gap and close, he did that with style which is a great attribute for a 2yo. He had plenty left in the tank and should have won the trial but many more lengths.

I like the way he extend late when asked. One of the top hopes.

Expected Position: Midfield

12. Shaqero ($160,000)

The son of Shalaa brings a different trial form line coming down from the Chris Wallers Gold Coast stable. He showed great natural speed in the 900m trial which was the fastest of the morning.

He idled comfortable in the straight and was never asked for a effort, he put up a length and half effortlessly and had plenty left in the tank. Impressive trial. He can aim up here.

Expected Position: Midfield

13. Stariks ($37,500)

A small speedy colt who closed off well in the straight. He was no match for Maurice Medad but had some to offer when showing a nice turn of speed. Prefer others.

Expected Position: Midfield

14. Unwritten ($210,000)

A Written Tycoon colt from the Hickman yard. He loomed up like he would go with the favourite Kalashnikov but was no match for him. He still suck on well and will improve off the trial. Prefer others

Expected Position: Midfield

15. Cruel Summer ($50,000)

Comes through a different form line with a impressive trial at Newcastle sitting off the tempo and closing well to make up huge ground late, hard to line up but he has some ability. Not in my numbers.

Expected Position: Midfield
