Rafael Nadal to retire after the 2024 Davis Cup

According to Chris Iorfida of CBC News on Thursday, tennis legend Rafael Nadal of Manacor, Spain has announced his intention to retire after the 2024 Davis Cup, which is being held in Nadal’s home country of Spain in November. This news should not be considered a huge surprise as it has been speculated for quite some time.

Spain is one of eight countries in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Davis Cup in Malaga.  They will be playing the Netherlands on November 19. The Spanish team currently consists of Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Roberto Bautista Agut and Pablo Carreno Busta.

In all, Nadal has won four Davis Cup Finals with Spain. He was on the court when Spain won in 2004, 2009, 2011 and 2019. Among the players he beat in the final were Andy Roddick of the United States, Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, Juan Monaco and Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, and Denis Shapovalov of Canada.

Nadal is most recognized for winning a record 14 French Open titles. Max Decugis of Paris, France is second on the list with eight. Nadal won his 14 French Open titles in a span of 18 years from 2005 to 2022. The only other French Open champions in this 18 year time period were Roger Federer of Switzerland (2009), Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland (2015), and Novak Djokovic of Serbia (2016 and 2021).

In the history of professional tennis, Nadal is also second in grand slam titles with 22. He is only second behind Djokovic, who has 24. Nadal also won four United States Open titles (2010, 2013, 2017 and 2019), two Australian Opens (2009 and 2022), and two Wimbledons (2008 and 2010). Nadal also won the gold medal in men’s singles at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
