Pistons name Troy Weaver general manager
June 19, 2020
According to Rod Beard of the Detroit News on Thursday, Troy Weaver of Washington, D.C. has been named the new general manager of the Detroit Pistons. Weaver has spent the last decade in the Oklahoma City Thunder organization. He was the Thunder assistant general manager from 2010 to 2018, and then the Thunder vice-president of basketball operations from 2018 to 2020. In addition to having a significant role in the Thunder’s player personnel decisions, Weaver was the vice-president of the Thunder from 2010 to 2018.
Prior to his decade with Oklahoma City, Weaver was with the Utah Jazz for four years. He was the Jazz head scout from 2004 to 2007, and then the Jazz director of player personnel from 2007 to 2008.
Weaver also comes to Detroit with coaching experience at the National Collegiate Athletic Association level. He was the assistant coach with the University of Pittsburgh Panthers from 1996 to 1999, the University of New Mexico Lobos from 1999 to 2000, and with the University of Syracuse Orange from 2000 to 2004.
While with the Orange, Weaver helped the University of Syracuse win their only National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball championship in the history of the school. In the 2003 championship game, the Orange defeated the University of Kansas Jayhawks 81-78 from the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. On the Orange squad was future NBA superstar Carmelo Anthony. As a player, Weaver played one season at Prince George’s Community College in Maryland in 1991.
Weaver now joins a Pistons squad that finished fourth in the Central Division with a record of 20 wins and 46 losses. Despite the NBA having 22 teams in their restart in late July, the Pistons will not be included in the restart. It will also be interesting what the Pistons decide to do with head coach Dwane Casey, and if he will remain part of the Pistons rebuild.
