Phil Mickelson chooses PGA Tour over the Champions Tour this week

Phil Mickelson is coming off his sixth career major title in winning the 2021 PGA Championship this past weekend in South Carolina. This week he decided to compete at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Dallas, Texas on the PGA Tour rather than the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship from Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Mickelson does have the option as to what tournament he can participate in, but it was a little surprising he chose a regular event on the PGA Tour rather than a major event on the Champions Tour. One would think the reason why he chose to compete on the PGA Tour this week, is that he still has hopes of representing the United States at the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin this September, and realizes he must impress captain Steve Stricker to achieve that goal. Mickelson is also carrying a lot of momentum in his golf game at the moment.

So far at the Charles Schwab Challenge, it has been a bit of a struggle for Mickelson. He is currently tied for 94th place and 14 shots back of the leader, Canadian-born American Jason Kokrak.

Meanwhile, at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, ironically it is  Stricker who is the current leader at -5. Due to the fact Stricker is not even in Dallas, and participating (and winning), makes Mickelson’s absence from Oklahoma even a little more puzzling.

This is the second major on the Champions Tour in 2021. Alex Cejka of Germany won the Regions Tradition earlier this month from Alabama. Mickelson meanwhile, won two Champions Tour events in 2020. He won the Charles Schwab Series at Ozarks National in Missouri in August, and the Dominion Energy Charity Classic in Virginia in October.
