PGA Tour gives special exemption for Tiger Woods
June 20, 2024
According to Mark Schlabach of ESPN on Tuesday, the PGA Tour is giving a special exemption to Tiger Woods of Cypress, California. Under the decision that was made prior to this week’s Travelers Championship, Woods will receive automatic entry into the PGA Tour’s eight signature events if he decides to participate in them.
It has been clear that Woods has not been at full health since his automobile accident in southern California in 2021. The most significant injury he suffered from the accident was a leg ailment, which required surgery.
The PGA’s eight signature events at this time are the Sentry Championship in Hawaii (traditionally only open to winners on the PGA Tour the previous year, but as of 2021 those who qualified for the Tour Championship as well), AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the Genesis Invitational, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the RBC Heritage, the Wells Fargo Championship, the Memorial Tournament, and the Players Championship. It will be interesting to see if there will be any adjustments to the Signature Event Schedule in 2025.
Woods has only played in three tournaments in 2024, and it has only been the three majors so far. He finished 60th at the Masters, and missed the cuts at the PGA Championship and United States Open. He has stated that the British Open in July will be the only other golf tournament he will participate in this year.
Woods is receiving this special exemption for his lifetime success. He has won 15 majors, 18 World Golf Championships. 82 PGA tournaments, and has the PGA record for most consecutive cuts made (142).
