PGA Tour brings back Brooks Koepka with conditions

When Brooks Koepka announced he was leaving the LIV Tour in late December, the overall general feeling was it would be just a matter of time before the five-time major champion  would return to the PGA Tour. In my Boxing Day report, I admit I was a little skeptical about Koepka returning to the PGA Tour. He is back now, but will not be treated the same as any other golfer, especially those who showed their loyalty to the PGA Tour when the LIV Tour was first established.

So what is actually different? According to Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press, Koepka does not automatically qualify for the Signature events, will not receive FedEx Cup bonus money in 2026, and is not eligible for PGA Tour equity grants for five years. There are eight Signature events (which can be compared to the Masters 1000 series in tennis) on the PGA Tour. They are the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Cadillac Championship, Truist Championship, the Memorial Tournament and Travelers Championship.

Koepka returning to the PGA Tour is great for the PGA Tour, and is a major loss for the LIV. Koepka is the first golf star to return to the PGA Tour from the LIV Tour, and it will be interesting to see if there will be anymore in the coming months.

Currently ranked 244th in the Official World Golf Rankings, Koepka was ranked as high as first. Koepka was first in the world for 47 weeks from 2018 to 2020. His major championships came at the 2017 and 2018 United States Open, and the 2018, 2019, and 2023 PGA Championship.
