According to Jim Sheridan of the U.S. Sun on Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers have signed running back Rashaad Penny of Norwalk, California. The Panthers are the third National Football League franchise Penny has played for. He was previously with the Seattle Seahawks for five seasons from 2018 to 2022, and one season with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023.
It is fair to say that Penny did not have much of an impact in Philadelphia. He was behind D’Andre Swift of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kenny Gainwell of Yazoo City, Mississippi, and Boston Scott of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on the Eagles running back depth chart in 2023. As a result, Penny only had 11 rushes for 33 yards, and one catch for five yards.
As we approach the 2024 NFL regular season, the Eagles have already made significant changes to their running back position. They have brought in Saquon Barkley of Bronx, New York from the New York Giants, saw Swift sign with the Chicago Bears, saw Scott sign with the Los Angeles Rams, draft Will Shipley of Detroit, Michigan out of Clemson in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and sign Tyrion Davis-Price of Baton Rouge, Louisiana from the San Francisco 49ers.
In Carolina, Penny also enters a situation where the Panthers have depth at the running back position. He is currently fourth on the Panthers depth chart behind Canadian Chuba Hubbard of Edmonton, Alberta, Miles Sanders of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Jonathon Brooks of Hallettsville, Texas, who the Panthers selected in the second round from the 2024 NFL Draft out of the University of Texas.
Penny’s most notable NFL seasons came with the Seahawks. He had 1918 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns in 42 games, and led the NFL with 6.3 rushing yards per game in 2021.
