Our NRL Team of the Week: Round 25 — Hughes for Dally M, Crichton hat-trick

Vintage Tommy Turbo popped up in a shootout at Leichardt, Melbourne main man Jahrome Hughes solidified his claim for the Dally M, and a host of NRL stars kept their team’s finals hopes alive.

Here’s the standout NRL players from Round 25, as selected by The Sporting Base team.

1. Tom Trbojevic (Sea Eagles)

The Sea Eagles lost (and weren’t helped by two sin bins) but Turbo was at his very best. Did about as much as he could in the eight-point heartbreaker, scored a hat-trick, ran for an immense 250-plus metres, and busted the line three times.

2. Daniel Tupou (Roosters)

Two tries, three tackle busts, and four line breaks in a vintage Tupou turnout.

3. Dane Gagai (Knights)

Was near unstoppable against the Rabbitohs, crashing over twice as the Knights fought to keep their finals hopes alive.

4. Kayal Iro (Sharks)

Terrorised the Dragons in a lopsided second half, busted a huge nine tackles and scored a try.

5. Xavier Savage (Raiders)

Bagged key tries first and last in the Raiders’ boilover against the Panthers on Sunday.

6. Lachlan Galvin (Tigers)

Another week, another Galvin spot in the TOTW. Marshalled the Tigers well as they stunned a Tom Trbojevic-led Sea Eagles, was excellent with ball in hand and passed several Wests players into dangerous positions and tries.

7. Jahrome Hughes (Storm)

I’d be shocked if Hughes wasn’t leading the Dally M race with two rounds to go. Even if the Storm rest him for the last two weeks, he should be a red-hot favourite for the top player gong.

8. Josh King (Storm)

Trucked hard to build the platform for the Storm, tackled at 90.6% efficiency in the middle, ran 143 metres.

9. Harry Grant (Storm)

Ran riot out of the ruck as the Storm blasted the Dolphins 48-6.

10. Joseph Tapine (Raiders)

Tapine led from the front as Canberra crowned the upset win of the round. Ran for 143 metres and made 35 tackles.

11. Angus Crichton (Roosters)

That shaved head must be something special—bagged the second hat-trick of his career as the Roosters flipped into second place. Arguably the best second-rower in the game right now and proved his spot at the top again on Sunday.

12. Samuela Fainu (Tigers)

Fainu has looked solid this season but rose to his best against Manly. Scored a try, made 34 tackles, and busted five tackle attempts as he charged through the Sea Eagles line nearly every carry.

13. Patrick Carrigan (Broncos)

Topped the run metres and tackle count as the Broncos battled back against Parramatta and a 16-0 deficit.
