Venus Williams of Lynwood, California is receiving a wildcard for the 2026 Guangzhou Open according to Dzevad Mesic of Tennis World on Wednesday. One can literally ask the one word question of why? The reason why the wildcard entry needs to be questioned here is because Williams has not played very good tennis over the last year.
Williams literally has a 15 match losing streak in singles. Her last victory was a 6-3, 6-4 win over Peyton Stearns of the United States in the first round of the 2025 Mubadala Citi Open in Washington. Williams’s win over Stearns was her first and only win since August of 2023.
In Williams’s prime, she was one of the better players on the planet. She won five Wimbledons in a span of nine years from 2000 to 2008. Venus also won the 2000 and 2001 United States Open, and was ranked number one in the world 11 weeks in her career. In doubles, Venus had a terrific run in women’s doubles. Venus and her sister Serena Williams won 14 women’s doubles grand slam titles.
The best explanation why Venus Williams keeps getting wildcards is because the WTA Tour and host organizers are letting Venus retire on her own terms. At age 46, we simply do not know how long Venus will keep going.
