The 2026 Major League Baseball regular season is now just over two months old, and over the last week one of the strangest injuries throughout the entire season occurred. On May 27, Miami Marlins starting pitcher Eury Perez of Santiago, Dominican Republic was stretching in the dugout in a game where he was on the mound against the Toronto Blue Jays when he strained his thigh muscle. Perez needed assistance to get out of the dugout, and as a result, he will be out two months according to Darragh McDonald of mlbtraderumors.com.
In 12 games this season, Perez has a record of three wins and six losses with an earned run average of 4.60. In 62 2/3 innings pitched, he gave up 51 hits, 32 earned runs, 11 home runs, and 28 walks, to go along with 72 strikeouts, four quality starts and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.26.
If there is one positive from the injury is that it is a lower body ailment for Perez. If it was an arm injury, Perez would have been out a lot longer. Perez actually missed the entire 2024 MLB season with Tommy John Surgery. The surgery came after an excellent rookie season where he had an earned run average of 3.15 in 91 1/3 innings pitched.
Miami is thin at this time when to comes to their starting pitching. The Marlins only have three starting pitchers on their depth chart. They are Max Meyer of Woodbury, Minnesota (who has gone 13 straight starts without a loss), Sandy Alcantara of Azua Dominican Republic (the 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner), and Tyler Phillips of Lumberton, New Jersey.
