Day four is now in in the books at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, and Australia came away with three medals in three different sports that involve water. Kaylee McKeown of Redcliffe, Queensland came away with a gold medal in the women’s 100 metre backstroke. Owen Wright of Culburra Beach, New South Wales won bronze in the inaugural men’s shortboard surfing competition, and Jessica Fox of Penrith, New South Wales, won the bronze medal in the women’s kayaking slalom. Wright and Fox won the first medals for Australia at the 2020 Olympic Games outside swimming.
McKeown won the gold medal with an Olympic record time of 57.47 seconds. McKeown’s swim was only .02 seconds off her world record time she set at the Australian Olympic Swimming Trials. Kylie Masse of Canada won the silver medal with a time of 57.72 seconds. Regan Smith of the United States won the bronze medal with a time of 58.05 seconds.
In the surfing, Wright, with the Goofy stance (named Goofy because he places his right foot forward on his board), beat Jeremy Flores of France 15-12.9 in round three, and Lucca Mesinas of Peru 12.74-7.83 in the quarterfinals, before losing to the eventual gold medallist Italo Ferreira of Brazil 13.17-12.47. He then beat Gabriel Medina of Brazil 11.97-11.77 in the bronze medal game. Kanoa Igarashi of Japan won the silver medal.
Meanwhile in the women’s kayaking slalom, Fox won the bronze medal with a time of 102.73 seconds. She reached the podium by 2.2 seconds over Stefanie Horn of Italy. Ricarda Funk of Germany won the gold medal with a time of 105.5 seconds. Meanwhile, Maialen Chourraut of France won the silver medal with a time of 106.63 seconds. The reason why Funk did not win gold is because she received four penalties, while Funk and Chourraut had none.
