Storm edge Panthers in thriller, inch closer to minor premiership
The Storm are one step closer to their fifth minor premiership in nine seasons squeaking past the Panthers 24-22 in a BlueBet Stadium epic.
A hectic opening forty saw Melbourne jump out to a double-digit lead behind quick tries to Grant Anderson and Eli Katoa before the hosts turned the screws with back-to-back tries to Lindsay Smith and Izack Tago to tie it up.
Katoa grabbed a second prior to the break before Dylan Edwards found points for Penrith on the other side of the half to keep the contest’s back-and-forth nature going.
With Nelson Asofa-Solomona in the bin, Casey McLean put Penrith ahead 54 minutes in before Tyran Wishart found one for the Storm.
Nick Meaney slotted a late penalty goal to win it for the Storm and help them put one hand on the J. J. Giltinan Shield.
Katoa scored two, ran for 110 metres, and made 35 tackles whilst Cameron Munster assisted on a try and ran for 146 metres.
Isaah Yeo assisted on a try, ran for 192 metres, and made 46 tackles whilst Lindsay Smith scored a try, ran for 119 metres, and made 50 tackles.
Sea Eagles too strong for Warriors at 4 Pines
Manly continued their charge towards the postseason with a 24-10 win over the Warriors at 4 Pines Park on Friday evening.
The two sides went into the sheds tied at 10-apiece with Jason Saab and Tom Trbojevic the scorers for Manly and Shaun Johnson and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak for the Wahs.
Reuben Garrick put the hosts ahead midway through the second forty before Lehi Hopoate crossed to seal it for Anthony Seibold’s men.
Trbojevic scored a try, assisted on two others, and ran for 198 metres with six tackle breaks whilst Hopoate scored a try and ran for 177 metres with five tackle breaks.
Addin Fonua-Blake assisted on a try, ran for 149 metres, and made 35 tackles whilst Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad finished with an assist and a game-high 218 run metres.
Roosters dismantle Eels, keep Top 2 hopes alive
The Roosters managed their third win on the trot downing the Eels 38-14 at Allianz on Friday night behind a Dom Young hat-trick.
The opening half-hour could not have gone much better for the Tricolours with Spencer Leniu, Young, Daniel Tupou and James Tedesco all crossing – the middle two coming with Wiremu Greig in the bin.
Kelma Tuilagi stopped the bleeding prior to the break before a Brendan Hands sin bin paved the way for Young to secure his hat-trick to go along with a Sitili Tupouniua try.
Young scored three and ran for 147 metres with 12 tackle breaks whilst Tedesco scored one, assisted on another, and ran for 219 metres with seven tackle breaks.
Clint Gutherson assisted on a try and ran for 162 metres with six tackle breaks whilst Tuilagi scored a try and ran for 123 metres with seven tackle breaks.
Bulldogs put on clinic in Bundaberg
The Dogs ran out 30-10 winners in a key clash against the Dolphins at Bundaberg’s Salter Oval on Saturday afternoon.
Jacob Kiraz notched a first-half double to along with a Josh Addo-Carr intercept as the Bulldogs took a 16-10 lead into the sheds.
Their defence held strong in the second forty before Connor Tracey and Bronson Xerri secured late tries to cap off the win.
Kiraz scored two and ran for 297 metres whilst Tracey scored a try, assisted on another, and ran for 238 metres.
Jake Averillo scored a try, assisted on another, and ran for 181 metres against his former club.
Holmes stars as Cowboys surge past Raiders
The Cowboys notched a handy 42-4 victory over the Raiders in Townsville on Saturday evening behind a Valentine Holmes hat-trick.
The opening stanza went nearly perfectly for Todd Payten’s men with tries to Jake Clifford, Holmes, Kyle Feldt and Tom Dearden propelling them to a 24-4 lead.
It proved more of the same in the second forty with Holmes grabbing tries No.2 and No.3 in the space of four minutes before Feldt found a second.
Holmes finished with 26 points to go along with 176 run metres whilst Clifford scored a try, assisted on two others, and ran for 197 metres.
Wests Tigers survive Rabbitohs at Campbelltown
The Wests Tigers are back in the winners circle having finished atop the Rabbitohs 18-16 in a tight one at Campbelltown
Tries to Charlie Staines, Luke Laulili’i, and Adam Doueihi – the final of which coming with Richie Kennar in the sin bin – saw Benji Marshall’s men take a 16-4 advantage into the sheds.
Aidan Sezer slotted a second-half penalty goal to extend their lead before tries to Keaon Koloamatangi and Damien Cook set up a grandstand finish.
The Rabbitohs looked to have stolen it at the death with Davvy Moale crashing over only for the final pass to be called forward.
Lachlan Galvin assisted on two tries and ran for 140 metres whilst Isaiah Papali’i ran for 167 metres and made 33 tackles.
Koloamatangi scored a try and ran for 195 metres with six tackle breaks whilst Jye Gray assisted on a try and ran for 167 metres with 11 tackle breaks.
Dragons take back No.8 with win over Titans
The Dragons pulled off a crucial 32-16 win over the Titans at a breezy WIN Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With the breeze at their backs, the Dragons poured on 26 first-half points behind tries to Christian Tuipulotu, Ben Hunt, Zac Lomax, Toby Couchman, and Luciano Leilua.
The tide turned in the second half with the visitors dominating possession but managing just two tries Jayden Campbell and Jojo Fifita before Francis Molo crossed to seal it for the Red V.
Hunt scored a try, assisted on another, and kicked for 692 metres whilst Tuipulotu scored a try and ran for 270 metres with five tackle breaks.
Keano Kini assisted on a try and ran for 344 metres whilst Jojo Fifita scored two and ran for 209 metres.
Atkinson the hero as Sharks down Knights in golden point
The Sharks remain in the Top 4 having snuck past the Knights 19-18 in a close one at PointsBet Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Daniel Atkinson and Briton Nikora both crossed in the opening seven minutes to get the hosts off to a hot start before the Knights hit back through Kai Pearce-Paul and Greg Marzhew to take a lead into the break.
Phoenix Crossland was binned as the half-time siren sounded for trying to slow down the play-the-ball but their defence held firm with him off the pitch.
Dane Gagai extended the Knights’ lead with a half-hour to play before a late penalty goal and Ronaldo Mulitalo try sent the game to golden point despite both teams nailing field goals which had been pulled up due to blockers.
Crossland missed a one-point attempt for Newcastle before Atkinson sealed it in the 84th minute.
Nikora scored a try and ran for 136 metres whilst Cameron McInnes ran for 125 metres and made 58 tackles.
Marzhew scored a try and ran for 206 metres whilst Tyson Frizell ran for 123 metres and made 34 tackles.
