Cowboys outlast Wests Tigers, inch closer to Top 8 berth
The Cowboys are one step closer to qualifying for the finals having taken down the Wests Tigers 48-30 at Leichhardt Oval on Thursday night.
A Murray Taulagi double saw the visitors take an eight-point edge into the sheds before a 49th-minute Justin Olam send-off with the Wests Tigers down just six courtesy of a Jahream Bula double flipped the clash on its head.
Taulagi found a third before Scott Drinkwater and Valentine Holmes crossed as the Cows made it three tries in a six-minute stretch immediately after Olam’s send-off.
The hosts responded with a spurt of their own courtesy of Solomon Alaimalo and Solomona Faataape tries only for the Cowboys to finish strong with Drinkwater and Kyle Feldt finding late tries.
Taulagi scored three and ran for 198 metres whilst Holmes scored a try, assisted on two others and ran for 171 metres.
Bula scored two and ran for 266 metres with nine tackle breaks whilst Samuela Fainu scored a double and ran for 102 metres.
Eels take down Warriors in Auckland
Parramatta took home a handy pair of competition points thanks to a 30-20 win over the Warriors in Auckland on Friday.
Tries to Jake Tago, Joey Lussick, and Daejarn Asi saw the visitors take an 18-4 edge into the half.
Blaize Talagi and Clint Gutherson notched back-to-back four-pointers to all but seal the result despite the Warriors finding a trio of tries in the final 10.
Gutherson scored a try, assisted on another, and ran for 225 metres whilst Dylan Brown assisted on two tries and ran for 146 metres.
Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad scored a try and ran for 315 metres with seven tackle breaks whilst Mitch Barnett ran for 174 metres and made 39 tackles.
Roosters survive Dolphins in 74-point shootout
The Roosters managed to outlast the Dolphins in a 40-34 shootout in front of a strong crowd at Perth’s HBF Park on Friday night.
A back-and-forth opening stanza saw the sides enter half-time locked up at 20-apiece with Sam Walker snagging a double for the Chooks.
A Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow try put the Dolphins ahead early in the second half before Daniel Tupou scored and Sitili Tupouniua grabbed a double in the space of just 10 minutes to push the Chooks back ahead.
Jack Bostock grabbed a 70th-minute try for the Dolphins with Joseph Manu in the sin-bin but their fightback came up short.
Walker scored two and kicked for 254 metres whilst Tupou scored a try, assisted on another, and ran for 137 metres.
Jake Averillo assisted on two tries and ran for 139 metres with seven tackle breaks whilst Max Plath scored a try and made 36 tackles.
Titans hammer Broncos as worries grow in Brisbane
Brisbane’s horror run continued on Saturday afternoon with local rivals the Titans handing them a 46-18 loss on the Gold Coast.
An early Reece Walsh double saw the Broncos jump out to a 12-0 lead before the Titans outscored them nine-tries-to-one across the final hour of the clash to storm to a memorable win.
Jojo Fifita snagged a maiden career hat-trick whilst Keano Kini grabbed a double to go along with tries to Alofiana Khan-Pereira, Phillip Sami, Brian Kelly and Beau Fermor.
Fifita scored three, assisted on three others, and ran for 138 metres whilst Kini scored two, assisted on two and ran for 202 metres.
The Titans have roared back into finals contention with five wins from their past six whilst Brisbane’s season is on life support with the side having nabbed just one win in the past 79 days.
Dragons break drought with stunning win over ladder-leaders
The Dragons notched their first win in Melbourne in a quarter of a century downing the ladder-leading Storm 18-16 on Saturday evening.
Harry Grant got the Storm on the board first before back-to-back tries to Jaydn Su’A and Tyrell Sloan saw the Red V take a lead into the sheds.
Su’A grabbed a second on the other side of half-time to extend the lead before Grant nabbed a double of his own an hour in to drag Melbourne back into the contest only for their late attacking raids to be thwarted by the spirited Dragons.
Ben Hunt assisted on two tries and ran for 102 metres whilst Su’A finished with a double and 156 run metres.
Grant scored two and made 46 tackles whilst Cameron Munster assisted on a try and ran for 177 metres.
Sharks too good for Bunnies in Shire
It may have been less than convincing, but the Sharks secured a valuable 20-6 win over the Rabbitohs on Saturday night in the Shire.
Jye Gray crossed for Souths just six minutes in before Sione Katoa answered for the Sharks in what were the only two tries of the opening stanza.
Sam Stonestreet put the Sharks ahead on the other side of the break before Braydon Trindall and Kayal Iro secured late tries for the hosts to seal it.
Iro scored a try, assisted on two others, and ran for 208 metres whilst Trindall scored a try, assisted on another, and kicked for 352 metres.
Gray scored a try and ran for 151 metres with 13 tackle breaks whilst Damien Cook ran for 146 metres with seven tackle breaks and made a game-high 45 tackles.
Panthers edge Knights at BlueBet in minor premiership boost
Penrith snuck past a gutsy Knights unit 22-14 at the foot of the mountains on Sunday afternoon as they look to secure their fourth minor premiership in five seasons.
Newcastle scored first through Daniel Saifiti before Penrith took a 14-6 lead into the sheds courtesy of tries to Casey McLean and Izack Tago.
Tyson Frizell crossed just shy of the hour-mark to drag Newcastle back into it before Nathan Cleary snagged a late try to seal a Penrith victory.
Cleary scored a try and ran for 183 metres with five tackle breaks whilst Isaiah Iongi ran for 256 metres with eight tackle breaks on debut.
Saifiti scored a try and ran for 158 metres with five tackle breaks whilst Greg Marzhew ran for 192 metres with 10 tackle breaks.
Belmore goes ballistic as Dogs down Raiders
An 18,110-strong Belmore crowd enjoyed Canterbury’s 22-18 win over the Raiders in Josh Papali’i’s 300th NRL game on Sunday afternoon.
Tries to Stephen Crichton and Trey Mooney saw both teams enter half-time tied at 6-6.
Crichton grabbed his second on the other side of the half before Josh Addo-Carr joined him on the scoresheet soon after.
Refusing to yield, Canberra clawed their way back into it courtesy of a Matt Timoko try only for a second Addo-Carr four-pointer late to seal it despite Rapana snagging another for the visitors.
Crichton scored two, assisted on another, and ran for 83 metres whilst Bronson Xerri assisted on a try and ran for 210 metres.
Joseph Tapine ran for 158 metres with six tackle breaks and made 29 tackles without a miss whilst Kaeo Weekes assisted on a try and ran for 158 metres.
