Raiders overcome sin bins to scrape past Dogs

The Raiders made it back-to-back wins taking down the Bulldogs 24-20 to open Magic Round on Friday evening.

A chaotic period late in the first half saw Jordan Rapana and Josh Papali’i both binned within four minutes of one another.

Jacob Preston, Stephen Crichton, Matt Burton and Jacob Kiraz all crossed in the space of 11 minutes to put the Bulldogs up 20-12 before a Hudson Young double saw the Green Machine surge back ahead and hold on for the win.

Young scored a double and ran for 141 metres with four tackle breaks to further press his Origin claim whilst Rapana ran for 202 metres with six tackle breaks and a line break.

Jacob Kiraz scored a try and ran for 241 metres with six tackle breaks whilst Crichton scored a try, assisted on another, and ran for 168 metres with five tackle breaks.

Madden the hero as Broncos take down Sea Eagles

A late Jock Madden field goal proved the difference as the Broncos came out on top of the Sea Eagles 13-12 on Friday night.

The Broncos jumped out to a 12-0 lead early with Brendan Piakura and Deine Mariner nabbing tries.

Manly surged back into it in the second half with Reuben Garrick and Raymond Tuaimalo Vaega crossing before Madden slotted a 75th-minute one-pointer to steal a win for Brisbane.

Patrick Carrigan ran for 265 metres from 26 carries and made 33 tackles whilst Madden kicked the game-winning field goal, assisted on a try, and kicked for 618 metres.

Garrick scored a try and ran for 212 metres with eight tackle breaks whilst Toluta’u Koula assisted on a try and ran for 253 metres at fullback.

Armstrong triple leads Knights to comeback win

David Armstrong continued his impressive run of form piling on three tries to spark Newcastle’s 28-24 comeback win over the Titans on Saturday afternoon.

The Titans took a 24-10 lead into the sheds behind an Alofiana Khan-Pereira double along with tries to Klese Haas, Jojo Fifita, and Keano Kini.

A scuffle between Aaron Schoupp and Jackson Hastings saw both men binned a half hour in before Armstrong – who scored twice in the opening eight minutes – secured his hat-trick on the other side of the break.

A try to Brodie Jones and a penalty try to Jacob Saifiti saw the Knights surge ahead late with a potential Brian Kelly match-tier being overturned late.

Armstrong scored three tries and ran for 264 metres with 10 tackle breaks whilst Dylan Lucas assisted on a try, ran for 136 metres with eight tackle breaks, and made 33 tackles.

Kini scored a try and ran for 221 metres whilst Beau Fermor ran for 180 metres and made 42 tackles.

Sharks pull off statement win in 68-point shootout

The Sharks remain atop the competition ladder having downed the Roosters in a 38-30 shootout on Saturday evening.

The Roosters overcame an early Joseph-Aukuso Sua’ali’i sin bin to take a 24-18 lead into the sheds behind a Junior Pauga double.

Tries to Siosifa Talakai and Ronaldo Mulitalo saw the Sharks surge back ahead before a late Tom Hazleton try sealed it for Craig Fitzgibbon’s men.

Nicho Hynes assisted on two tries and kicked for 440 metres whilst Cameron McInnes ran for 153 metres and made 33 tackles.

James Tedesco ran for 195 metres with nine tackle breaks and a line break whilst Dom Young scored a try and ran for 163 metres with eight tackle breaks.

Cowboys survive Rabbitohs in scrappy affair

The Cowboys outlasted the Rabbitohs 28-22 on Saturday night in a game that featured 22 errors between the teams.

Todd Payten’s men took a 16-12 lead into the break behind tries to Viliami Vailea, Tom Dearden, and Braidon Burns before Burns grabbed another on the other side of the half.

Cody Walker crossed to bring Souths back into it but Dearden’s second in the 70th minute proved enough despite a late Damien Cook try as the Cowboy snapped their five-game losing streak.

Scott Drinkwater assisted on two tries and ran for 158 metres with five tackle breaks whilst Reece Robson ran for 127 metres and made 45 tackles.

Tallis Duncan ran for 188 metres and made 22 tackles off the bench whilst Mitchell scored a try, assisted on two tries, and ran for 70 metres with 10 tackle breaks.

Warriors upset defending premiers in Sunday thriller

The Warriors ended their four-game losing streak in incredible fashion toppling the Panthers 22-20 on Sunday afternoon.

Tries to Dylan Edwards and Jarome Luai saw the Panthers take a 10-4 lead into the sheds before an Isaah Yeo sin bin allowed the Warriors to storm ahead courtesy of tries to Ali Leiataua and Adam Pompey.

Yeo scored upon return before Izack Tago crossed to wrestle the lead back the way of the defending champs only for Taine Tuaupiki to snag the match-winner in the 70th minute.

Edwards had the chance to send it to golden point with a long-range penalty goal in the final stages but was unable to nail it.

Tuaupiki scored a try and ran for 198 metres whilst Te Maire Martin assisted on a trio of tries and kicked for 599 metres.

Edwards scored a try, assisted on another, and ran for 149 metres with half a dozen tackle breaks whilst Yeo scored a try, ran for 180 metres, and made 40 tackles.

Storm fire as more questions arise for Eels

The Storm ran riot to hand the Eels their fourth loss in a row winning 48-16 on Sunday afternoon.

Their lead was only six points heading into the break courtesy of tries to Tui Kamikamica, Will Warbrick, and Harry Grant before the floodgates opened in the second half.

Grant scored a second, Reimis Smith scored a double, and Xavier Coates and Eliesa Katoa found second half tries as they poured on 32 straight points en route to the two competition points.

Blaize Talagi scored a try, assisted on another, and ran for 197 metres whilst Dylan Brown assisted on a try and ran for 161 metres.

Tabuai-Fidow, Dolphins too good for Wests Tigers

A double courtesy of returning fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow led the Dolphins to a 24-12 win over the Wests Tigers to close Magic Round on Sunday evening.

Jack Bostock and Mark Nicholls crossed to put the Dolphins up by a dozen before Justin Olam powered his way over to cut the deficit back to six heading into halftime.

With the Wests Tigers down a man and fresh off a period in which they were down two, Tabuai-Fidow grabbed his first 48 minutes in before Apisai Koroisau snagged a try to keep Benji Marshall’s men in it only for Tabuai-Fidow to seal it late with his second.

Tabuai-Fidow scored two and ran for 257 metres whilst Nicholls scored a try, ran for 138 metres, and made 34 tackles.

Origin hopeful Stefano Utoikamanu ran for 158 metres and made 26 without a miss whilst Koroisau scored a try and made 43 tackles.
