NRL orders Dragons to tear up Amone’s contract for role in hammer attack

St George Illawarra has been issued a notice from the NRL proposing his $500,000-a-year contract be torn up after he was found guilty of assaulting a tradie in what the courts described as an “appalling” rooftop hammer attack.

Amone has long been considered a long-term star for the Dragons. He has already played 54 first-grade games for the club and was signed through to the end of next year. He also debuted for Tonga last year and has three Test caps.

The NRL served the 21-year-old with a breach notice on Tuesday afternoon, proposing his deregistration. Processes now mean Amone has five working days to respond to the notice. The NRL said in a short Dec. 19 media release on its website that “wellbeing and counselling services have been made available to the player” earlier today.

The young five-eighth was sentenced to two years imprisonment by way of an intensive corrections order and 300 hours of community service at Wollongong Local Court last week.

He was also fined $1,000 for a charge of Destroy or Damage Property and ordered to pay the victim.
