Jarome Luai is leaving the Wests Tigers, but the debate over his legacy is only just beginning. Two years, millions of dollars and plenty of headlines later, was his signing actually a success?
On paper, the results don’t make for great reading.
The Tigers are on track to miss the finals once again, and Luai’s departure before the final year of his contract has inevitably led many to label the signing a disappointment. But judging his stint purely on wins and losses ignores the bigger picture.
When Luai arrived from the Penrith Panthers, he wasn’t just recruited to play halfback.
He was brought in to change the culture.
After years of instability, the Tigers wanted a proven winner who knew what success looked like. Luai had won four straight premierships, represented New South Wales and Australia, and carried the standards that helped make Penrith the benchmark club in the NRL.
That challenge was always going to take time.
The Tigers showed signs of improvement during Luai’s tenure, but they were also trying to rebuild around a young squad while dealing with injuries, roster turnover and constant scrutiny. Even after announcing his move to the PNG Chiefs, Luai insisted he remained fully committed to helping the club break its long finals drought before he left.

The biggest twist came earlier this month.
Despite having another season remaining on his contract, the Tigers informed Luai he was free to leave at the end of 2026. The decision surprised the 29-year-old, who admitted he didn’t see it coming, although he accepted the club was looking towards the future with emerging halves such as Latu Fainu and Javon Andrews.
There has also been speculation surrounding his relationship with coach Benji Marshall.
Rumours suggested the pair had fallen out after Luai committed to the PNG Chiefs, but both Luai and Marshall have publicly denied any rift, insisting they still share a strong relationship despite the difficult circumstances surrounding his early release.
So, was the signing worth it?
If the expectation was that Luai would single-handedly turn the Tigers into a premiership contender, the answer is probably no.
But if the goal was to inject belief into the club, mentor its next generation of playmakers and help lay the foundations for a brighter future, there is a stronger case that his impact won’t be fully appreciated until years from now.
Either way, Luai’s Tigers chapter will be remembered as one of the most fascinating experiments in recent NRL history.
And while it may not have delivered immediate success, it could still prove to have been an important step in the club’s long-term rebuild.
