Michael Maguire’s future has been one of the biggest talking points in the NRL this season. Now, Brisbane Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy has delivered the club’s clearest statement yet, shutting down rumours the premiership-winning coach could be shown the door.
After weeks of speculation surrounding Maguire’s position following Brisbane’s disappointing title defence, Donaghy declared there was no uncertainty about who would be coaching the Broncos in 2027.
The Broncos have endured a difficult campaign.
A lengthy injury toll, the departures of several key players for 2027 and a dramatic slide down the ladder have fuelled suggestions the club could consider making another coaching change despite Maguire leading Brisbane to the 2025 premiership.
Donaghy, however, could not have been more emphatic.

“You can quote me on this … Madge will be our coach.”
The Broncos CEO reminded critics that Maguire signed a three-year contract when he joined the club and said Brisbane remained fully committed to the veteran coach.
It is the strongest public backing Maguire has received since pressure began mounting over Brisbane’s form.
The coach has regularly dismissed questions about his future, insisting his focus remains on improving the team’s performances rather than responding to outside noise.
The comments also appear to end speculation linking Maguire with the vacant St George Illawarra coaching role.
Former Dragons premiership player Dean Young has emerged as the leading candidate after impressing as interim coach, and incoming Dragons recruit Scott Drinkwater has now publicly backed Young to secure the position permanently.
“He’s a great coach and I hope he gets the job,” Drinkwater said.
The Cowboys fullback praised Young’s communication skills and the improvements he has already made since taking charge of the Dragons.
For Brisbane, the priority is now restoring confidence heading into next season.
The Broncos entered 2026 as defending premiers and among the competition favourites, but injuries and inconsistent performances have seen them fall well below expectations.
Despite that, Donaghy believes changing coaches is not the answer.
Instead, the club is backing Maguire to guide Brisbane through the current challenges and oversee the next phase of its roster transition as several high-profile players depart at the end of the season.
The endorsement also sends a clear message to the playing group.
Regardless of where Brisbane finishes this season, Maguire will be the man leading the Broncos into 2027.
In a year dominated by coaching speculation across the NRL, the Broncos have finally made their position crystal clear.
