It took all of 60 minutes and an entire period of overtime before the Seattle Seahawks defeated the San Francisco 49ers 27-24 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA on Monday night. It what could have been the game of the year, the Seahawks moved closer to first place in the NFC West with a record of eight wins and two losses, while it was the 49ers first loss of 2019.
Seattle trailed San Francisco 10-7 at the half but controlled the third quarter of action. Tight end Jacob Hollister and running back Chris Carson each had touchdowns. Hollister had a three-yard catch from Russell Wilson, while Carson had a one-yard run for the major score. All of a sudden the Seahawks had a commanding 21-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The momentum shifted in San Francisco’s favour. That is when Wilson fumbled and the ball was picked up by DeForest Buckner, who had a 12 yard fumble return for a touchdown. Jimmy Garoppolo then found Kendrick Bourne in the end zone for the two point conversion to make the score 21-18 Seattle. The 49ers tied the score twice with field goals. The 47 yard field goal by 49ers kicker Chase McLaughlin tied the game at 24 on the final play of the fourth quarter.
In overtime, 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw almost became the hero as he intercepted a Wilson pass at the 49ers four-yard line and then ran the ball 47 yards into Seattle territory. The 49ers moved the ball down to the Seattle 29 yard line, but McLaughlin felt the pressure and missed a 47-yard field goal that was nowhere close to going anywhere near the uprights. The Seahawks and 49ers then had back-to-back three and outs before Seahawks kicker Jason Myers connected on a game-winning 42 yard field goal on the final play of the extra period.
Most games in professional sports do not live up to the hype when there are high expectations. Monday was simply a treat and the fact that the game required the full 70 minutes to determine a winner was simply awesome!
