NFL Season Preview: Dallas Cowboys can go all the way

2020/21 Season results

The AFC

The Chiefs are strong favourites to come out of the AFC, but there are a number of young, talented teams that look ready to really compete.

The AFC North may well be the most competitive division in the league. The Browns are favourites but the Ravens will fancy their chances against any team in the league with former MVP Lamar Jackson at the helm. And the Steelers defence may well be the best in the league – in T.J. Watt they have one of the leading candidates for defensive player of the year. 

The Chargers are the big threat to the Chiefs in the AFC West. With Justin Herbert a year older they will be hoping their young QB can take another step forward and really put himself among the elite quarterbacks in the league – some may even have him in that group already.

The AFC East looks like Buffalo’s to lose. The Patriots will always be a threat but they are a team in transition. The Jets could be a surprise package if Zach Wilson can be as good as the team hope he can be after taking him at number two overall in the draft. The Dolphins should provide the biggest threat to Josh Allen and co, but they look to be second best and perhaps a wildcard spot should be their aim.

The AFC South is perhaps the least predictable right now. The Titans will be fancied by many to repeat their success of last season, but the Colts with Carson Wentz and Jaguars with Trevor Lawrence are a little unknown. If either of those quarterbacks can hit the ground running with their new teams then they could provide a genuine threat to Tennessee.

The Chiefs are the class of the conference, but so much can change in just one play. Things could look very different when we come to the playoffs in January. I fancied the Ravens strongly a year ago and they disappointed, but they have so much talent in the team. If they can unlock the passing game then don’t be surprised to see them pip Kansas City to the AFC title.

The NFC

While the AFC looks like the Chiefs to lose, the NFC looks wide open. The Buccaneers, Packers, 49ers, Rams, Seahawks and Cowboys all have a very good argument to come out on top. 

The west could be a brutal division. It really is hard to separate the Rams, 49ers and Seahawks and it would be no surprise to see all three in the playoffs. With Matt Stafford the Rams have gone all in on the current roster and it is easy to see why. They had one of the league’s most dominant defences a year ago and adding a top quarterback could be the final piece. If Stafford can hit the ground running – and I would back him to – then they could well be the biggest threat to the Buccaneers.

Aaron Rodgers and his desire to leave the Packers has dominated the NFL news cycle for months, but in the end they came to an agreement and he will return to Green Bay. While it is obvious to see why they are second favourites for the conference, they have done little to plug the holes they had a year ago, and have had for years now. I do not see any team in this division really challenging them – the Bears could if Justin Fields gets on the field early – but I do not think the Packers have what it takes to beat out those NFC West teams or the defending champions.

It is all change in the NFC South with Drew Brees retirement, the Panthers addition of Sam Darnold and Julio Jones heading out of Atlanta. But the Buccaneers have done the extremely rare thing of returning their entire team of starters from 2020. They should come out of the division and with the seemingly immortal Tom Brady under centre they are clearly one of the favourites to go all the way.

If Dak Prescott is healthy after his massive injury a year ago then the Cowboys should be far and away the best team in the NFC East. That is a big if though. Washington took the title last season but it was with a 7-9 record. The Giants have the same question marks as a year ago and the Eagles are relying on a big step up from Jalen Hurts. Despite their defensive issues it is hard to look past Dallas and they may be the dark horse for the Super Bowl if things break right.

Player Awards

Picking out the winners of MVP can be hard. Aaron Rodgers season didn’t come from nowhere, but there had not been many signs he would play at that level again. So backing the really short prices is something I try and avoid. If Josh Allen can play at the same level as a year ago then 11/1 could be generous. It is a quarterback award so I wouldn’t look to back anyone outside of the position. So at some longer odds, and with incredibly talented offences around them, Dak Prescott and Baker Mayfield could be excellent value at 17/1 and 33/1 respectively.

Last season I thought that T.J. Watt should have been named as defensive player of the year, but he can right that in 2021. 7/1 is a great price for a player that shows up on highlight reels every single week.

If Trevor Lawrence lives up to expectations then there is no doubt he will be named Offensive Rookie of the Year. 4/1 almost feels too big. If he stays healthy then you can probably pencil him in now. Zach Wilson and Najee Harris look to have the best chance of the rest but they would be relying on something unexpected happening from the first overall pick.

Super Bowl

This feels like a very open Super Bowl with so many teams packed full of talent. Backing against Patrick Mahomes doesn’t work out too often but the price is very short. Instead I would take a chance on a couple of NFC teams in the Cowboys (25/1) and Rams (14/1) to really emerge as the season goes on.
