The National Football League regular season came to an end on Sunday. On an annual basis, various NFL teams that miss the playoffs and underachieve, fire head coaches a day after the season ends, and on Monday, it was no different. The New York Giants parted ways with head coach Pat Shurmur of Dearborn, Michigan and the Cleveland Browns decided to change coaches as well when they released Freddie Kitchens of Gadsden, Alabama of his head coaching duties.
The Giants finished the 2019 NFL regular season with a record of four wins and 12 losses. The Giants made progress on offense in 2019 with young quarterback Daniel Jones at the helm, but the fact New York gave up 451 points this season, had to be a huge factor in Shurmur’s release. The Giants gave up the second most points in the NFC and the third most points in the NFL. Only the Carolina Panthers (470 points) and Miami Dolphins (494 points) have given up more points this season than the Giants.
The Browns release of Kitchen came as no surprise if you read my post from last week. What might have been a surprise to some is that the Browns actually lost to the equally pitiful Cincinnati Bengals by a score of 33-23 on Sunday. Cleveland dropped to a record of six wins and 10 losses, while the win for Cincinnati was only their second win all year.
From gloom to bloom, let’s take a quick look at the teams that had a good day on Sunday. The Philadelphia Eagles clinched the NFC East with a 34-17 win over the Giants. The Tennessee Titans also booked their ticket to the postseason as a wildcard in the AFC with a convincing 35-14 win over the Houston Texans.
