Jaguars name Doug Pederson head coach

The Jacksonville Jaguars have named Doug Pederson as their new head coach according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN on Thursday. The Jaguars become the second team that Pederson has been a head coach for in the National Football League. He was previously with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2016 to 2020.

In five seasons, Pederson had a record of 42 wins and 37 losses. However it was his first season in Philly which was the most meaningful. He took the Eagles to the Super Bowl in 2018 with a 2017 regular season record of 13 wins and three losses. In the postseason, the Eagles beat the Atlanta Falcons 15-10 in the NFC Divisional Playoff, the Minnesota Vikings 38-7 in the NFC Championship, and the New England Patriots 41-33 in the Super Bowl. It was in the fact the first and only Super Bowl title in the history of the Eagles franchise.

A native of Bellingham, Washington, Pederson was an assistant coach in the NFL for seven years before being a head coach. He was the Eagles quality control coach from 2019 to 2010, the Eagles quarterbacks coach from 2011 to 2012, and the Chiefs offensive co-ordinator from 2013 to 2015.

There is no doubt that Pederson left Philadelphia on a sour note. In his final game coaching the Eagles, he put in the completely inept Nate Sudfeld at quarterback rather than staying with Jalen Hurts. The move was controversial because an Eagles win over the Washington Football Team would have given a playoff spot in 2020 to the New York Giants. Pederson was fired by the Eagles shortly after.

As a player, Pederson was a quarterback for 10 NFL seasons with the Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, Eagles and Cleveland Browns from 1993 to 2004. He completed 286 passes in 522 attempts for 2762 yards and 12 touchdowns. Pederson was mostly a backup QB in Green Bay to Brett Favre.
